During Midnight's run of THE LION IN WINTER, colleague John Wolbers brought me a play to look at - BORN WITH TEETH by Liz Duffy Adams, a brilliant contemporary language and style take on Shakespeare & Marlowe as young, ambitious, lusty, bisexual, revolutionary playwrights - gathered to work on HENRY VI and to avoid being hung. The show takes place in the backroom of a London pub, and what better space to do it than the theatre off the Dive Bar of Greenfinch..
John & Michael Pierce would do the roles, and I recruited Joel Moses to direct (all veterans of the LION show.)
We applied for rights, and even held a reading. The response for rights was slow, and finally final. They were looking for a Broadway run. We were sceptical. A two person Shakespeare-style show on Broadway? Better have a name cast.
But then their plan was revealed - a West End London show, probably with a couple hot Netflix British actors, and then Broadway.
So we lost it - John, Michael and Joel pivoted to other shows - all happening in and around October, 23 - and with the space booked, I looked elsewhere.
An easy solution was one more remount of NOW PLAYING... a show I'd done successfully at The Fringe and a run at The Chapel. After all, it was the 60th anniversary of the play's events. (p.s. the script for the show is available on this site's PAST PRODUCTIONS page, linked to the performances.)
I brought in Morgan Clark to direct. She'd put together successful shadow cast ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOWs, as well as a one woman show at the recent Fringe about PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, and she knew th Greenfinch tech system very well.
It was good to do once more, and our small crowds were enthusiastic.
Critics had already seen and reviewed this show at least once (again reviews can
be found on the PAST PRODUCTIONS links to earlier shows), so no new reviews appear here.
